Maria Del Mar Monty makes art that you want to crawl inside of. Her large canvases are lacquered in layer upon layer of vibrant colors and strong images. She creates collages that could only be made in Barcelona, at once welcoming and challenging. You may have seen her work at the Su Casa es Mi Casa or El Jardín exhibitions in Barcelona. She has also exhibited in the YLYH ARTSPACE in Valencia and has an upcoming show in Hong Kong at the New Gallery on Old Bailey.
When we asked Monty how she sees her art, she described it as the “observation and destruction of images; the obsessive deconstruction of ideas, the existing into a manic and intricate web; fun; childish.” She explains, “I am motivated by the fragments and representations that I see around me in the day to day. The loss and longing of the human condition. Time and distance.” And her plans for the future? She simply wishes to “keep exploring my ideas with passion. To grow artistically and continue taking my work abroad.”
