It’s that time of year again, that brief shining moment in the cinematic calendar where city-wrecking explosions are replaced with tear-wrenching dramas. It’s Oscar season. The 89th Academy Awards will take place on February 26th, so there’s still time to catch few hard hitters and place your own bets.

Leading the charge for Best Picture is Damien Chazelle’s charming musical La La Land, which reunites Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone and recently won a record-breaking seven Golden Globes. On the other end of spectrum is Mel Gibson’s acclaimed war drama Hacksaw Ridge, featuring Andrew Garfield as a pacifist medic, eager to serve his country but not take life.

Casey Affleck is hotly tipped for Best Actor for his role in the melancholic Manchester by the Sea, released here in February, while Fences, a ‘50s set tale of a working class African-American family led by Denzel Washington, lands at the end of the month.
