Reading an engrossing book or the excitement of waiting for a package to arrive in the letterbox are occasions growing fewer and far between as the electronic age takes over. However, they still occur and give us pleasure.
The online book finder AbeBooks was developed in the 90s in Canada, initially including listings from just four bookstores. It has since expanded into the German, French, British, Italian and Spanish markets. Now, two years after becoming a subsidiary of Amazon, the search and purchase ability continues to grow. The company’s structure though remains the same and gives small, independent booksellers a standing chance against superstores. At the same time, purchasers have online access to a multitude of choice. Second-hand gems that are no longer in print, rare editions from all over the world, unique manuscripts, vintage photographs and old magazines are all accessible through the vast network. With titles like What Not to Wear on a Horse, Toilet Paper Origami and Anyone Can Be Cool…But Awesome Takes Practice, there’s something for everyone’s coffee table.
