Catalunya's dia del llibre (book day) has just passed us, but if you need a belated St. Jordi present to offer your loved one, a bit of Catalan practice or simply a good read, Tarragona-based publishers Arola Editors have just the thing. All Angles 1: Big Magic is a brand-new collection of seven short stories by English-language writers based in Catalunya, with translations into Catalan by native speakers.

After a competition in Catalonia Today magazine in 2009 established connections between writing groups in Barcelona, Tarragona and Girona, the idea of a bilingual anthology was taken up by Arola as a means of establishing a market for English-Catalan publishing within the region. Though each is inspired by or set in Catalunya, the seven stories vary greatly in terms of both style and substance: for example, Jessica Rainey imagines tourism in a post-apocalyptic city in “PPA Barcelona,” Tony Tysoe's “A Longer Time Coming” is a tale of family betrayal and revenge set in the Eastern Pyrenees, while Georgina Tremayne's title story “Big Magic” describes a day in the life of one of Catalunya's mythical giants.

Edited by Catalunya-based Anglophones Paul Connell, Georgina Tremayne and David Gary, the anthology serves to highlight both the growing English-language writing scene in the area and the talents of individual writers and translators, and also features a preface by Antonio Bassas, former Catalunya Ràdio presenter and current Washington correspondent to TV3. Priced at €15, the book can now be ordered from Arola's website and is also available to buy in selected bookshops in Catalunya. The second volume in the series, All Angles 2: Souvenir, featuring seven more stories and their Catalan translations, is due to be published in time for Christmas this year.
