There has been no escaping some pretty heady, patchouli-scented 70s nostalgia this year – the summer was awash with floor skimming hemlines and swinging leather satchel bags – and it looks set to linger into the colder months too. A great many of this season’s looks seem to hark back to the decade of long hair and crochet, but there is a sleeker new take hitting the fashion conscious high-street chains fresh for autumn.

Summer wardrobes may have channeled the daydream of dazed road trips to Woodstock and sun-dappled pilgrimages to Marrakesh – people hitting the Rambla del Raval kitted out in suede boots, leather fringing, raffia bags and worn denim – but if the fantasy has faded with the tan lines and temperatures, a swiftly administered dose of glamour and sheen seems to be the tonic to shake you out of it.

Think of soft-focus photos of languid Donna Summer-types hanging out at Studio 54, their slick white wide-leg pants sharply belted at the waist, huge wedges peeping out the bottom, topped off with an ultra slinky silk shirt and a nonchalant stare to boot. Not necessarily time to throw out the paisley carpet bag or threadbare suede waist coat just yet, but the 70s party look is an altogether sexier and sequined mix of silky Kimono shapes, metallic and super sheer threads, plunging necklines, and thigh-high slits on floor-length gowns – all pulled off, of course, with a regal Geisha-like calm.

Dressing up like an Amazonian nightclub goddess is certainly easier said than done, and Mango and Zara are here to help, but fitted tuxedo trouser suits, slim fit blazers and clashing digital-style optical prints certainly tell a sharper, more assured version of summer’s romance with the decade.
