Although the term “Black Music” might sound strange to American ears, the word is used widely outside of the US to refer to music produced or inspired by black people.

What: Marula Café

Where: C/ Escudellers, 49 (Barri Gòtic)

When: Mon-Sun 11pm-6am

Why we like it: Marula’s idea is that, all 365 nights of the year are open for you to shake your booty until the sun comes up to tracks by Rodrigo and Antonio Requena, amongst others. A club that started in Madrid, its second location doesn’t just provide fine black beats, but also offers a space for exhibitions, film shoots, presentations and of course, concerts.

What: Bar Clandestino (Taxidermista basement)

Where: Plaça Reial, 8 (Barri Gòtic)

When: Fri-Sat 8pm-3am

Why we like it: WANTED is the club’s highlight on Thursdays, with DJs Karl Hungus spinning funk, soul, old school hip-hop and reggae, and Zé Pequeno playing samba-rock and samba-soul. Hungus says, “When you succeed in making people dance – but REALLY dance, I mean not slightly moving your feet – to grooves they’ve never heard and which we made the effort to find on vinyl record, well the feeling is just awesome.”

What: The Joint Sessions at Dos Trece

Where: C/ Carme, 40 (Raval)

When: Thurs 10pm-2.30am

Why we like it: Roger C leads the show with eclectic local and international artists, as well as a true dedication to quality music. You’re guaranteed to hear deep funk, reggae, R&B, raw soul, jazz breaks, Latin boogaloo, and Afro beat, to name but a few. For your viewing pleasure, there are projections of cult films and 60’s and 70’s retro TV shows. The kitchen is open until midnight to increase your dance floor stamina.

What: Jamboree

Where: Plaça Reial, 17 (Barri Gòtic)

When: Mon-Sun 9.30pm-5am

Why we like it: Two dance floors where you’ll find groovers pumping and grinding until the wee hours of the morn to hip-hop, R&B, world music and obscure beats. Before the club, the WTF jams go from 9.30pm to 1am every Monday with performances by international artists playing blues, jazz and R&B. “It’s the only club for me where I can really dance,” exclaims 32-year-old Mónica.

  • On a slightly more constructive note:

The WTF jam sessions which ONLY happen on a Monday at Jamboree are really worth checking as is the Tuesday jazz jam session at the ever interestingly and eclectically programmed Heliogabal (C/ Ramón y Cajal, 80) in Gracia.
The Powder Rooms at The Apolo on a Thursday night shouldn't be overlooked as well, although it has lost it's way of recent times and now shares the night with other promoters they still occasionally have interesting world class DJs and it's contribution to the black music scene in Barcelona is massive.

  • Jamboree

The club sessions at Jamboree are an exercise in lowest common denominator hip 'pop' and teeny bopper R&B, I would only recommend going if you are under 21 and aspire to calling your girfriend a hoe and pimping your ride..
