Brunch is not a particularly Spanish pastime. Well, how can it be in a place where lunch is such a damn important meal? That being said, Barcelona appears to be finding space for the breakfast/lunch hybrid. Of course, it happens later here than in other international cities; some brunches are served until 4pm. But the principals remain the same: eggs take center stage, Sunday supplements are rife and cocktails are acceptable before midday. Take a look at some of our favourites.

Picnic

Picnic’s rather highbrow take on brunch has become quite popular since appearing in the prestigious blog El Comidista. They serve New York classics such as eggs Benedict and Bloody Marys. Portions are served with care and style.

Federal Café

A sterling offering from the Barcelona Aussie contingent. Sitting in the heart of Sant Antoni, you won’t miss the open front and cream awning. Brunch has an Antipodean flavor: fruit toast with ricotta and truffle honey is a favorite. And save space for the Oreo muffins, you’ll be hooked.

Barceló Raval

For a touch of glamour, head to Barcelo Raval’s roof terrace. All day Sunday there’s 360-degree views of the city and a DJ spinning laid back tunes. For €25 a person you can feast on unlimited pastries, bocaditos and cava cocktails, with traditional fare like eggs Benedict available on a separate menu.

Marmalade and Milk

For Brits missing home, the Milk and Marmalade mini-chain does a mean Full English, and were one of the first to bring brunch to Barcelona. In cozy surroundings you can sup on cups of tea and tuck into mountains of sausages and bacon.

Brunch?

Spite of being a bcn designer and a confessed "early adopter", I have to admit that some trends like "brunch" have no sense in BCN and they don't provide me anything. Brunch: a guiri imported euphemism for saying 15 eur for a f***ing "huevo frito". No, in this case I still prefer a Vermut.

Market, anothe place worth a visit

Market does also a great brunch on Sundays. The place is a gem, hidden behind Sant Antoni Market.

Suprised Marmalade and Milk have ended up on this list. I've been a couple of times and always have been completely underwhelmed by Marmalade and Milk. Unfriendly staff and the food is expensive for the greasy stuff that ends up on your plate.

Federal on the other hand - incredible baked eggs for breakfast. Beautiful coffee, smoothies and staff that make you feel welcome everytime you go there. Never had enough room left at the end for the cakes at the end... but the menu at Federal is amazing all round.
