simple. They invited different artists to cover or remix famous songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s and post them on the Buffet Libre website. The DJs then ‘cut and paste’ their favorites into a mix tape. A big tribute to music nostalgia, they explain that they wanted to produce music they love and provide it as a free, legal download. As the duo gained notoriety, the idea expanded. Music fans are now able to post their own mixes. Despite over 500,000 people downloading their first mix tape, Rewind, the DJs didn’t rest on their laurels and recently released a second edition. It features covers from over 80 artists, including a playful “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Starfucker and a poppy “Neverending Story” remake by the Canadians. They accept any style, genre or year, and add that the difficult task isn’t choosing which songs to include, but rather which artists. With a new project called PEACE, 2009 looks to be the year of the Buffet Libre phenomenon.
