In recent months, Barcelona has taken to the new trend with wholehearted gusto. Twee and pastel-tinged new shops have opened up across town, such as Lolita in the Born and l’Eixample’s Cup & Cake. Companies like Florentine Cupcakes & Cookies, opening its first shop in the Born on Dec 3, and I Love Muffins, offer custommade cupcakes to suit every and any need. So why are the cakes enjoying a new-found favor in Barcelona? What part can Barcelona play in the cupcake revolution? And what does the future hold for the trend in our city?
Jenny, the founder of I Love Muffins, feels that we owe Barcelona’s new love affair with the cupcake to “a big new trend in American food”—a trend that extends to other areas such as brunches, bagels and burgers. She acknowledges that the current “cupcake boom” is likely to calm down, but feels that there is longevity in “personalized food that offers great attention to detail.” Elisa at Florentine Cupcakes believes that there is no end of scope for creativity when it comes to cupcakes, explaining, “You can play with combinations of flavors, colors and decorations.” And when it comes to creativity, Barcelona has never been shy in stepping up to the cakestand.
