Making his directorial debut, producer Marc Abraham (Children of Men) brings us the true story of college professor and part-time inventor, Robert Kearns (Greg Kinnear). For 15 years Kearns battled the US auto industry for stealing his intermittent windshield wiper idea. Go on, groan. Fortunately, Kinnear’s portrayal of this average, middle-class Joe, chasing his version of the American dream makes the film much more than a predictable power struggle. In turn, it propels Kinnear from his usual supporting role status (Little Miss Sunshine, As Good as It Gets), to protagonist class, as a man who refuses to compromise his dignity and ethics at any cost. Can this modern-day David succeed and bring Goliath to his knees?
