Five minutes from Palau de La Música, Cora Egger, atherapist from Switzerland, has a small LOM art therapy workshop in her third-floor flat. A warm and bubbly woman – a few weeks from giving birth to her first child – she happens to be the daughter of one of LOM’s founders.

Developed by Bettina Egger – Cora’s mom – and Jörg Merz, LOM is a solution-geared form of art therapy, helping people to resolve specific life traumas through painting. As Cora explains, “The mind records traumatic events, but the images are stored in different places. Here we put the images together to tell the story and deal with the feelings.”In order to get to the root of the problem, participants areasked to paint with the hand they do not write with. “They have less control that way and more things come out subconsciously,” Cora points out. When clients don’t have a picturein mind, they paint metaphors. For example, “If your fear of flying was a fruit, what fruit would it be?” She does offer specific workshops dealing with aerophobia and another with dreams. Throughout the sessions, Cora stands by for support and gets a bit choked up when talking about successful cases where she saw participants overcome their pain.
