Once upon a time, TV sets were a rare commodity. It isn’t that long ago that entire streets or indeed whole villages would crowd around a single set, amazed by the moving pictures beamed from the other side of the world. A certain prestige bestowed upon the owner, a communal sentiment long-since forgotten, and a feeling that you were witnessing a part of history in the making has all but died out in today’s plasma screen-dominated, TV in every room modern age. With an affectionate throw back to a bygone age, the Brionvega range of retro-designed portables reignites the passion for classic goggle-box vision. Cutting edge electronics company Super//Fluo resurrected the classic Italian TV brand with a limited edition, numbered range of Brionvega’s Algol and Doney design masterpieces. While a piece of TV history is up for grabs, the company has also pushed the Brionvega name firmly into the 21st century with the Alpha design, a piece of retro-futuristic equipment straight out of Stanley Kubrik’s 2001: A S pace Odyssey. At €1,500, the sets certainly aren’t cheap, but then these aren’t your average stickin- the-corner accessories; wherever you put them, these TVs become the focal point of any conversation.
