Shower curtains incorporating tossed toilet roll wrapping, soy sauce packet wallets and detergent label slippers are a few examples of ‘Trashion’, the latest trend taking Europe by storm. The fad began in Indonesia where wages are low and pollution abounds. In order to put an end to both, entrepreneurs like Aswin Aditya cropped up creating brands that reincarnate garbage for fashionable everyday use. Items from Aditya’s company Plastic Works are sold internationally through monsoonvt, a US-based online eco-shop. “The name Plastic Works is a message for the residents of Jakarta in particular, that there is a mechanism in place to re-purpose non-recyclable plastic waste,” explains monsoonvt’s Julia Genatossio. “Landfills, waterways and city streets suffer the consequences of this garbage which has no place to go”. Monsoonvt recently revamped their site to offer these peculiar products to folks in Europe. “We are a collaborative of people on both sides of the world and we’d like to serve as a reminder to everyone that the Earth is a small planet when it comes to pollution,” Julia adds. So, instead of tossing cash to the Fendis and Vuittons this autumn, purchase a cute and colourful new pack fashioned out of toothpaste tubes – all in the name of ‘Trashion’.
