The daunting task of shopping work around to different publishing houses and then being forced to wait ages for replies can make any newbie writer feel frustrated and trapped. Luckily, instant gratification is possible through the freedom of self-publishing with digital marketplaces like lulu.com. Lulu lets writers upload work, set prices and sell bound versions or downloads. Margo Macabee, who recently used Lulu for her first novel Masks of Nudity, raves, “It was great work, speedy deliveries and efficient people.” However, she points out that Lulu is worlds different than working with the über PR machines provided by traditional houses. “You do have to market yourself entirely, but that’s why they call it ‘self’-publishing,” explains Margo. The opportunity of selling work through online retailers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble, along with Lulu’s distribution to 100 countries, make the possibilities virtually endless.
