Tattoos have become the new chic accessories, like a miniature dog or over-sized pair of sunglasses. In fact they are so ‘in’ they are almost ‘out’, but now there is a new fad catching on that allows the tattooed to become the tattooer. Alex Harris, an experienced home tattoer calls it, “a way of approaching life that people can learn from by simply doing what they want, instead of following the system when it comes to expression.” The home tattooing art form is becoming more popular as people wish to make their own body art, rather than another’s. Home tattooers are uploading videos of their work on YouTube, groups and clubs of home-made tat makers have sprung up on facebook, and the underground movement is showing no signs of slowing down. The technique requires a lot of courage, or a very large bottle of wine in some cases. The tools needed include a needle, thread, a pen or stick, ink and big cojones. This isn’t just fun and games though. Don’t try it at home until speaking to an expert, like Alex for directions and advice. May the force be with you!
