There’s something about Australia, it’s a huge country with few people in it, but it does manage to produce an inordinate amount of excellent funk and soul divas. Randa Khamis is certainly one of the best; she’s been compared to soul sisters Marva Whitney and Vicki Anderson by MOJO and Blues & Soul, which is a fine recommendation.

What You Need is Randa’s second album for the UK’s Freestyle Records and was produced by Melbourne’s very own godfather of funk Lance Ferguson from The Bamboos and Cookin’ On Three Burners. It sees her spreading her musical net a bit wider. There are still plenty of gritty funk workouts with punchy brass like “Power In Me” and “Watch It,” but also makes excursions into new territories. “The Things” is a pure 120bpm disco groover, “Slide” a blues ballad, there are nods towards Afrobeat in the title track and “Be Yourself” is a high-octane northern soul / Motown style soul stomper.

What You Need certainly guarantees Randa & The Soul Kingdom’s place at the table with today’s modern funkateers, and we look forward to seeing them on tour in Europe sometime in 2012.
