As a nutritionist, one of the most common questions I’m asked is, “What can I eat to increase my energy levels?” My answer is always the same: eat foods that give you energy, not rob you of it.

What does this mean? Eat a plant-based diet and every three to four hours eat a meal that includes protein, carbohydrates and fat. Eating small frequent meals throughout the day regulates blood sugar levels and promotes good digestion.

Not sure how to incorporate these steps in your day to day? The easiest way is to always pack a healthy snack. My favorite snack is a healthy homemade energy bar. Try my raw protein power bars. These bars are healthier and much tastier than anything you can buy in the stores. All of these ingredients are easy to find in most health food store across Barcelona. Enjoy!

2 cups puffed quinoa (or raw oats)

1/2 cup cocoa powder

1/4 cup raw hemp seeds

1/2 cup sliced raw almonds (or any nuts you like)

1/4 cup ground flax or chia seeds

2 tbs raw coconut oil

3 tbs almond butter

2 tbs agave

4 scoops hemp protein powder

1/4 cup flavor bits (any combination of chopped unsweetened dry fruit and/or raw cacao nibs, etc.)

1/2 cup water (more if needed)

1. Mix dry ingredients together in a large bowl.

2. On low heat melt coconut oil. Remove from heat once melted.

3. Combine coconut oil, almond butter, agave and water. Mix until well blended.

4. Place plastic wrap at the bottom of an eight-inch pan. Make sure you leave some to cover the top.

5. Place mixture in pan and press with plastic wrap.

6. Freeze for minimum one hour

7. Cut into five bars (store in the fridge).
