Getting into a taxi in Barcelona is always an adventure. You never know what kind of driver you’ll end up with: could be a devout Catholic with lots of Jesuses hanging from the ceiling, one who believes infidelity is inherent to the male race, or even a taxista of the soulless variety, who does nothing but complain about foreigners and the mess they’re making of the city. For females not wanting a surprise, a new line of ladies-only cabs is in circulation.
A trend present in London, Dubai and New York, ‘pink’ taxis offer female drivers for female passengers. While Barcelona’s pink fleet is small (only about 20 drivers) and not pink – they decided against designating the cabs with pink stickers – it is quickly becoming popular since Servitaxi’s president José Manuel Zamora announced the special ladies-only hotline, known as Línea Rosa, last December.
