Recommendations of Polish and Russian masterpieces from VOID video club, Spain’s first video club specialized in auteur cinema. VOID*ZELIG not only offers a specialized video library, which is open to the public, but is also a space for people to meet, plan and do audiovisual projects.

BLIND CHANCE (KRZYSZTOF KIESLOWSKI, 1987)

An early, but important work by Kieslowski, although the film was made in 1981, its release was suppressed by Polish authorities. In this movie, chance enters the scene as the protagonist lives out three possible scenarios with the same beginning but different endings.

KNIFE IN THE WATER (ROMAN POLANSKI, 1962)

Debut by acclaimed French-born, Polish director Polanski, this excellent thriller featuring three characters tells the story of the fantasies, dreams, frustrations, traumas and fears conjured up by the presence of a young hitchhiker on a boat trip with a married couple.

IVAN’S CHILDHOOD (ANDREI TARKOVSKY, 1962)

Tarkovsky’s Russian masterpiece follows the life of a child, Ivan, yearning to be an adult during World War II. He becomes a spy and must cross a swamp while avoiding capture by the Nazis. The harsh story, told in non-linear fashion, contrasts with its beautiful imagery.

THE RETURN (ANDREI ZVYAGINTSEV, 2003)

Russian director Zvyagintsev maintains the somber and sober spirit of his other films while moving viewers with superb technique, cinematography and performances in this awardwinning film about the dramatic reunion of a father and his two sons.
