I never quite understood all the hype around Formula One. But after watching Asif Kapadia’s outstanding documentary about the Brazilian racecar driver Ayrton Senna, a three-time Formula One world champion, my opinion has changed.
Compiled exclusively from archival footage, Senna brings you close to this historical figure and behind the scenes to the rivalries, politics, ever-changing rules and regulations, and technical details of Formula One history during his 10-year ascendance. The film includes an in-depth account of the 1994 spring weekend at San Marina where both Senna and Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger tragically died in crashes.
As winner of Sundance’s World Cinema Documentary Award, the film is an editing masterpiece and a true enjoyment for even those who might not care about motor racing. By far one of the best docs I have seen this year, this film is a must see.
