Creativity and entrepreneurship are today’s norm. Chalk it up to the economy, but it seems that young people these days are prone to working freelance or starting up their own business. It’s become quite common to see the current crop of youth juggling multiple jobs: teacher, blogger, graphic designer, creative director, photographer, fashion designer and so on. Creativity is not the easiest skill to master, yet most of these youth-attracting titles require a handful of imagination.

Tamara Martin aka Tamara ItHunter is one such jack-of-all-trades. The job titles under her belt include blogger, stylist, designer, journalist and recent addition to the faculty at IED Barcelona. Tamara’s latest project, The Flakes, was born out of her experience as designer and stylist; these detailed, hand-crafted necklaces are made from delicate vintage-laced fabrics and available from her website, The Backyard.

In a recent interview with the Fashión con Acento blog, Tamara shared her reasons for choosing to create an accessory rather than apparel line: simply put, she said it was much more practical. Traveling as she does between Munich and Barcelona on a regular basis can be challenging, especially if you have to add a sewing machine to your check- in baggage. Accessories were the sensible alternative.

According to Tamara, The Backyard is about “restoring the value of things made with patience and dedication, re-purposing materials and producing a limited series of accessories.” The Flakes represent her first series, a small collection of three necklaces with a romantic, vintage theme, priced from €29 to €39. Each series will have its own unique identity with The Backyard as the place to showcase each of these small collections of artisanal creativity.
