The Future begins with a cat – a scraggy stray named Paw Paw who, as his squeaky narration tells us, is adopted by Sophie (Miranda July) and Jason (Hamish Linklater). The addition of the wounded pet to their shambolic LA home forces the couple to face up to their long-deferred adulthood, the looming threat of old age and the hazy aimlessness of their lives.

Written and directed by July, The Future continues along the lines of whimsical retrospection that she established in her first full-length, Me and You and Everyone We Know. This second film sees her further blur the boundaries between fantasy and reality, dabbing touches of both innocence and irony to the narrative and and colouring her scenes with talking moons, super powers and magic t-shirts – quirks that might well irritate some, but will enchant others. Astutely observed and very endearing, The Future is a beautiful portrait of the wonder and wistlessness of modern life.
