DJs Cèsar Lorès and Toni Bass wanted to “renew the local music scene” while also gaining an international profile. They saw a disco club night as their opportunity. Encouraged and inspired by the success of nights like London’s Horse Meat Disco, they began planting the seeds of a burgeoning new club movement in the city. Athletic Disco Club started its life last year as an exclusive pool party on the roof of the Barceló Raval hotel. Since then it has moved on to monthly events at Cabaret Berlin, where increasingly high profile international DJs such as Todd Terje and Daniel Wang have taken to the decks. In its wake, other nights such as Legionarios del Disco have also flourished.
Barcelona’s new disco scene respects and references seventies and eighties disco but never mimics it. The nights are all about a fresh sound with a focus on re-edits and nu-disco. Clued-up DJs spin everything from Italo-disco to disco funk, celebrating a new era for the timeless genre.
This modern approach also extends to the aesthetic. Corduroy flares and comedy glasses are for disco revival parties. Barcelona’s new scene is crammed with forward facing fashionistas showcasing an individual contemporary style. And in apt disco tradition, a flamboyant gay scene is crucial and central to the lifeblood of the city’s disco nights. Here you will find trannies, teachers, fashionistas and disco purists all coming together for the shared experience of a fresh new scene in a city yearning for change.
