Not quite the Hoverboard that made Michael J. Fox the coolest guy on the planet, the GroundSurf nevertheless could prove to be the halfway house replacement for the urban skateboard. Developed by passionate surfer Stephane Pelletier, the GroundSurf combines the look and shape of a skateboard with the feel and manoeuvrability of a surfboard. Recognised as “surf, but on the ground” by a selection of world champions, the board blends high technology with surfer know-how. An electric motorised front wheel allows for a 3D cinematic rear truck that reacts to your body movements, much in the same way as with a surf or snowboard. Sensors provide acceleration and deceleration, and there’s an optional touch screen Bluetooth remote control. Californian surf brand Gordon&Smith will launch the pioneering new boards in spring 2008, and whilst they will retail at €1500-2000, it still hurts if you fall off.
