We Barcelonans are not famed for taking it easy. Our city is a place where you’ll find people to party with every night of the week. But we’re also a health conscious bunch; fresh fruit from the Boquería market and runs along the sea front are a regular feature for many. So it makes sense that Spain’s rising interest in non-alcoholic cocktails seems to be influencing our drinking habits.

Not to be mistaken with smoothies, non-alcoholic or “virgin” cocktails have started appearing on drinks menus across the city. They are blended just as a standard cocktail would be and look just as appealing, but with the added benefit of actually improving your health. Just as with smoothies, if you drink virgin cocktails on a regular basis you will improve your general health and appearance. It’s not a bar tender’s job to kill the vibe with talk of anti-carcinogens and raised metabolisms, but you can sup happy in the knowledge that these are all added benefits.

Virgin cocktails may not always hit the spot; sometimes only a dirty martini will do. However, they are a nifty way to add a sense of occasion to your evening without having to drink alcohol. As the trend rises in popularity it will begin to feel less and less alien to order your Cosmopolitan sans vodka. And if you fancy trying your own non-alcoholic cocktails, we spoke to Drinkmotion’s Diego Arnold, who offered us one of his favorite recipes:

Power Fruit

3 cl grapefruit

1 cl lime juice

Half a banana

1 slice of pineapple

2 tsp guarana with mint mash

Ice

Blend all of the above in a blender until frozen and serve in a chilled glass.
