Art

Tactile Mind isn’t the typical book for the blind. Though the text is in Braille, the main attraction is the 3D tactile photography of nude images shot by photographer Lisa J. Murphy. Aimed at the visually impaired, the book is an artistic way to introduce the visual arts to an audience typically ignored by the genre.

Murphy, who holds a certificate in Tactile Graphics (raised surface images for the visually impaired) from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, personally sculpted and photographed the pieces featured in the book—she even self-published it. Made from thermoform plastic, the material traditionally used to create Braille text, the book features a wide variety of body shapes and sizes, with accompanying descriptions in Braille.

Murphy decided to create the book due to what she saw as a sincere lack of available, erotic art for the blind, a scarcity more striking given what she describes as our “much-sexualized world.” Individual pages, or the book itself, are available for order online and through special retailers. With options like this, readers are sure to notice more than meets the eye.
