Miniblog

My adoration for the neighborhood I live in is nothing new. I just adore Poble Sec (minus the occassional stabbings, the 'sad bar' on C/Blasco de Garay that plays Salsa music about heartbreak as old men drown their sorrows in Estrella after Estrella, and the very gaudy shops on C/Blai).

What I love about the Sec is the crashing (literally head-on) of different cultures. It is a place where old Catalan traditions slam into Dominican, United Statesian and Middle Eastern customs. A place that has a pedestrian walkway filled with charming bars and eateries, among them the best tea place in town: La Fíbula at number 46.

Now, there is a way I can wear the barrio with pride on hand printed T-shirts from designer, Frederick Garcia. His Barrio Maps collection might be a bit of a yawn (white Tees with the grid of neighborhoods like Raval, Barceloneta and Eixample slapped on in black), but what's great is the fact that Poble Sec is included in the series. Normally, Poble Sec is the forgotten neighborhood, heck, even the Miniguide has yet to have a map dedicated to "Dry Town."

Another way though for us Dry Town residents to show off where we live, is to print up personal envelopes with the Google Map location of our home, via the website: Map Envelope. They look kind of like Darth Vader's helmet and are pretty mini (depending what size paper your print on), but you can print up exact locations and even include a message on the envelope, like "Hey, wish you were here."

So, whatever your 'hood, wear/post it with pride and if you think the magazine should carry a Poble Sec map, let us know.

I think Poble Sec is the best 'hood too. Maybe because its all pushed up against the mountain and the port, with nowhere else for it to go, that help make it what it is. It was my fave hood almost 8 years ago when I moved, and still is today...
