A dairy lover I am not, however I can appreciate the extreme Chinese artist's wild imagination for his latest work, With milk, find something everybody can use, that will take over the Pavelló Mies van der Rohe next to the Pl. Espanya magic fountain from December 10th on. Part of the other portion of the population, one with an intolerance for lactose, it takes all my strength to get by the cheese shops in the city and have the occasional, rich taza de chocolate -it is bad for me, this I know, but it is soooo good- so, going to check out an exhibition all about milk, is well, not top on my list. Recently though, I have been turned on to soy milk and getting my calcium fortification from Vive Soy -the less soy-ish of soy beverages, since it does contain all those unnamed but numerical additives that make otherwise unbearable foods edible and enjoyable- the best is the chocolate flavor. For Weiwei though, he is not about soy substitutes, but the real, heavy, fetal position inducing -at least for me- beverage from cows.
The central subjects in his installation are 65 tons of milk and 15 tons of coffee, which he will use to fill the pools around the van der Rohe structure. According to the exhibition press release, the aim of the work is to get people to reflect on the purpose of architectural structures, usually seen as unique and unalterable. By introducing two daily items (milk and coffee) into the space, he hopes to broaden everyone's view on the use of architectural spaces. Always controversial -his blog has been shut down by the Chinese gov't for example- the artist is known for getting viewers to think. Stop by and take a look and a think for yourself December 10th at 1pm.
