Whether a fan of Irish step dancing a la The Lord of the Dance, more of a hip-hop stepper or a wanna be, or a prima ballerina, today is the DAY of the DANCE!

There is no other dance film more iconic than Fame (although White Nights with Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov comes in a close second). Today, throughout the world, people are paying tribute to the Lydia Grants (Debbie Allen's character) and Leroys (Gene Anthony Ray's character) of the dance world, as part of the International Day of Dance.

A former dancer myself, who from age 6-16 did everything under the dance umbrella: ballet, tap, jazz, pointe and even attended Dance Camp (yes, there is such a thing) in NYC and received a class from Bambi Swayze (sister of the late Patrick), where she choreographed a dance to "She's Like the Wind", I am ready to get out on the street today, where dancers will be twirling about and see if I can still move as gracefully as I once could (this might be painful!).

At 1.30pm, at Rambla de Santa Mònica de Barcelona, more than 200 people will dance a simple choreography under the direction of Toni Mira (National Dance Prize 2010) and Clàudia Moreso, with live music accompaniment from Carles Santos. In addition to this, 150 activities will be happening throughout Cataluya, including shows like V.I.T.R.I.O.L, on at Mercat de les Flors, as well as performances of Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake by the Moscow Ballet at the Teatre Coliseum until May 16th. More info here.

"You've got big dreams? You want fame? Well, fame costs. And right here is where you start paying ... in sweat." Debbie Allen as Lydia Grant in Fame.
