I first heard about this from Perez Hilton's - a demi-god for celeb gossip and the like- website. It showed a clip of Ashton Kutcher chatting with a random person in Ohio - I think- thanks to chatroulette. Described as a "new service for one-on-one text, webcam- and microphone-based chat with people around the world," it is incredible to know that the service popular with celebs and mere mortals was created by a 17-year-old named Andrey Ternovskiy from Moscow, "just for fun."
You go to the website, press play and another person online, from anywhere in the world, is chosen at random to be your chat partner. Why would anyone want to do this? Just because it is another way to avoid doing work and also, with the possibility of a famous person being on, and chatting with them, you can brag to friends and family that you IM with the rich and famous.
I thought I would try it out and see if I could snag a chat with someone famous. Now, when you press play and your chat partner pops up, you can choose to stay with them, or select next to get another random person. I think I was playing at a disadvantage considering I didn't have a webcam, and no one really wants to get into a conversation with a big black hole, now do they? But then again, a big black hole would have been welcome in place of some of the people I was chosen to speak with 'at random'.
The first chatter I was paired with was in his boxers, sitting on a couch, strumming his guitar, I'm thinking maybe his roommate had left the webcam on accidentally? Because after about two minutes, he got up, scratched his derriere and left the room.
NEXT.
Another male, this time it looked like he was laying in bed playing chatroulette.
NEXT!!
Yet another guy, this one though, was all torso and below the waist as the webcam shot everything from his shoulders down.
NEXT!!!!
Where are the celebrities? I thought. And why do I keep getting 'creepy' guys. Then I got a couple, what looked like a teenage boy, some black holes (like me) and then I just gave up.
I have to say, it did seem cool, especially the opportunity to interact with people in different parts of the world, that is, until you get some guy in his boxers strumming Dave Matthews songs... but, give it a whirl.
