Still on a high from winning the World Cup title this year, Spain is ready to kick some European athletics butt as the host city of the 20th European Athletics Championships, happening from July 26th–August 1st at the Olympic Stadium site.

To kick things off, there will be an extravaganza at the magic fountain (Font Màgica) tonight, July 26th at 10 pm. Free of charge, according to the B10 site, it will have the "crème de la crème of the Catalan and Spanish art and music scene." Among the performers will be Deambulants (a collective of dancers, plastic and visual creators, theatrical designers, musicians and clowns), Salvador Niebla (drummer), Jaime de la Iguana (Graphic designer, art director, producer and photographer) and La Troba Kung-Fú (Catalan rumba, cumbia and dub group).

The theme of the ceremony is “the power of water" and will feature a soundtrack composed by Nacho Cano (former member of Spanish pop group Mecano and now an arranger and producer of musicals like A and Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar). The concept and art direction of the show comes from Hansel Cereza, a former member and founder of La Fura dels Baus (who performed at the '92 Olympics opening ceremony), as well as choreographer of the famous Cirque du Soleil show, Love.

After the ceremony, La Troba Kung-Fú will perform at Plaza Universo and there will surely be plenty of toned, athletic bods abounding during the ceremony and around the city in the week to come.
