Although it is only temporary, put in place to house the fishmongers and grocers as renovations are done on the original, which opened in 1882, it was quite an undertaking. Over the whole of the summer, workers sweated it out building up the new market, which, personally, I don't really get, if it is just temporary, what's with all the bricklaying and wall construction and why not just close off different sections of the old market and go little by little renovating, instead of overhauling the whole of Ronda Sant Antoni?
Before, as you made the walk towards Universitat it looked wide and expansive and you could see on either side, now, with the large market structure, it is a bit, well, claustrophobic, not to mention -what seems like- all the unnecessary work that was done changing roads for cars into pedestrian ways and vice versa, all for a market that is will only to be up for the next three years---but, hey, the project gave some folks much needed work and pay over the crisis-ridden summer months, so, I am fine with that. I just wonder where all the stamp, football card and general junk collectors and swappers are going to go on the weekends, the new market doesn't seem to have reserved a space for them.......
And with that, if you are from the hood and want to see what all the fuss is about, take a trip to market, there may even be some free samples in it for you!
