A Facebook group has been created to protest for higher billing of Catalan acts in September’s BAM (Barcelona Acció Musical) music festival, part of Barcelona’s wider La Mercè celebration. The group, numbering over 1,000 members, calls for more native Catalan artists to be included in BAM’s lineup, pointing out that the city’s cultural (and government-sponsored) events should reflect Barcelona’s status as the capital of Catalunya.

Elisenda Serra created the Facebook protest group after observing that in 2009, less than 15% of BAM’s acts performed in Catalan. BAM, which in July contributed an evening of live music to Montjuïc de Nit, organizes most of the concerts for La Mercè, which takes over the city the last week of September – a symbolic month for Catalunya, with the diada (National Day of Catalunya) occurring on the 11th. While the 2010 program for the hugely popular celebration is still in the works, protest groups like Elisenda’s are drawing attention to important perspectives on living in bilingual Catalunya, and are testament to a thriving sense of Catalan pride in showcasing homegrown talent.
