Barcelona doesn't exactly have a reputation as a tolerant place for live music, but the Barcelona Acció Musical (BAM) music festival, part of Barcelona’s wider La Mercè celebration, represents a major departure as it sees three days of free, live music brought to stages across the city. Download the concert schedule here.

Beyond sure-to-be BAM favorites like Suckafish P. Jones (Thursday), Antipop Consortium and Goldfrapp (Friday), and Belle & Sebastian (Saturday) – not to mention burlesque by the very own Vinila von Bismark with The Lucky Dados (Saturday) – here are a few lesser-known picks from a Miniguide friend and local music guru (who has chosen to remain anonymous):

    THURSDAY

    • El Guincho: Canary Islands-born resident of Barcelona, creates electronic music sampling tropical rhythms, à la Animal Collective or Os Mutantes. I like what I’ve heard from his new album. This artist is becoming well-known outside of Spain and was recently profiled in a generous review in Pitchfork.
    • Standstill: mythic band from the Barcelona hardcore / punk scene (although their sound has evolved greatly since then). Not one of my favorites, but they have a loyal following. Last year a new documentary came out on them that was shown at In-Edit.Beefeater 2009.
    • Nueva Vulcano: emergent, indie punk rock group from Barcelona that is beginning to catch on – worth a listen.

    FRIDAY

    • Mishima: Barcelona band that sings romantic, quality songs in Catalan.
    • The Morning Benders: American band with a few albums out of tranquil, pop rock. I enjoyed their album Big Echo. This is not (yet) a popular group, but I think they’re a quality band.

    SATURDAY

    • Maika Makovski: Part Macedonian, part Andalucian rock musician and resident of Barcelona. While I am not a huge fan of her music, she is a great live performer.
    • Toundra: Another personal recommendation, these are instrumental musicians from Madrid that I discovered recently and loved live.

No info is yet available on 2011's line-up. Stay tuned.

      Cheers,
