Bonnie “Prince” Billy, with a moniker inspired by Nat King Cole and Billy the Kid, is now a critically lauded, much-admired crafter of folky-alternative-country Americana. His heartbreaking “I See A Darkness” was covered by none other than Johnny Cash, to which he lends backing vocals; and yet, he retains an unshakeable rootsy punk aesthetic.
Never quite the rock star, he performs his gentle, haunting songs from behind an unkempt beard or baseball cap as though the stage and rows of avid devotees were incidental, the music a kind of hymn to a cinematic deserted hinterland of solitude and rural desolation. His new album Wolfroy Goes to Town will be released on October 4th.
