You might not know Els Catarres, but if you spent the summer in Barcelona you probably know “Jenifer.” The band's first single was Catalunya's smash hit of the summer, with its video reaching over a million hits on YouTube in just a few months. Mixing light, summery acoustics with lyrics recounting a tale of “forbidden love” between a radical Catalan patriot and a Spanish-speaking girl from Castelldefels, this tongue-in-cheek and undeniably catchy tune was stuck in heads and on radio stations for weeks – politician Jordi Pujol even quoted it in a recent speech.
The trio are no doubt set for continued success with the release of their first album on November 29th, though they generously allow their music to be downloaded free from their website. Now touring Catalunya until early December, you can catch Els Catarres at the Esclerock 2011 multiple sclerosis benefit concert (joining Gossos, Patxi Leiva, Boxets and Mon Sogas) on November 11th or at the Festes de la Sagrera on November 12th.
