Describing his new project as like an “open-air version of the Bosque de les Fades” (the half magical, half garish faux-forested bar by the Wax Museum), artist Baixas is bringing some drama to dinnertime, and creating an eccentric new spin on the “supper club” vogue just in time for the last days of the cooling summer. Since we last heard from Baixas, with collaborative experimentary show earlier this year at The Private Space gallery based on the forms and expressions of hands – a specialist area for the artist – he’s continued to work on the isolation of body movement as an art form, finding in the Antic Teatre “a unique place” in which to do it.
As he explains, the dinner will be accompanied by performances, music and visuals from him and invited friends, with specially adapted lighting for the optimum intimate experience of the space “and all its splendor.” It is not, he stresses, to be seen as a “play” in the conventional sense, but more a kind of exuberant, joyous exercise in carpe diem, “hippy style”: people just turn up, have a laugh, eat well and socialize. And as with all good theater, there is an element of intrigue and suspense. Baixas doesn’t divulge any more details on the performances; they are, he tells us, to remain “incognito” but that that they are sure to “surprise.”
