To say that French-Finnish duo Olivia Merilhati and Dan Levy, aka The Dø, are a little difficult to categorize musically is probably the understatement of the year. The words “off-kilter” and “eccentric” spring to mind, but imagine a punky-folk hybrid fused with trip-hop and electronica then add some melancholy strings and you’re partway there. Olivia’s vocals have been compared to Björk and Fever Ray but really The Dø are out there in unchartered territory of their own.

That’s not say that they’re not approachable; their 2008 album A Mouthful went to number one in the French album charts, the first time ever for a French group singing in English. They’ve also recorded a marvelously moody version of the John Lennon classic “Jealous Guy” in their own inimitable style. The Dø have just released a new album Both Ways Open Jaws on Village Green containing some excellent songs like the drum driven “Slippery Slope” and the disorientating “Gonna Be Sick.” Live, they expand to a six-piece band, incorporating lots of intriguing instruments and peculiar percussion.
