Barcelona is not a city that is short on club nights. However we could do with a few more that offer interesting artwork, international DJs and eclectic music policies. In steps The Monkey Bar. The brainchild of Spanish DJs and general scenesters Alfonso López and Daniel Resende, the parties take place sporadically in various locations around the city.

Although the music policy is open, there tends to be a focus on disco, deep house and techno. Past Monkey Bar guests have included resident DJ and now partner Dario Damerini, Tokyo’s deep house legend Kez YM, Hyperdub’s Kyle Hall, Dixon and Henrik Schwarz from the German label Innervisions, Berlin-based techno phenomenon Marcel Detmann, Kompakt's DJ Koze and legendary figure Daniel Bell from the Detroit scene.

The Monkey Bar like to keep things fresh, so you may find their soirees around pools in Eixample or at the recently opened lounge and club Slow, where they’re organizing a party this month. The line-up’s looking good. First up there’s Dusseldorf’s Patrick Specke – he is signed to Desolat and making waves on the deep house scene. He will be joined by The Monkey Bar owners themselves; Alfonso will bring his signature mix of “avant-garde” house and techno.

The crowd likes to dress with style but have their priorities firmly focused on the music and the party vibe. Keep an eye on their website for future projects. And show love to local promoters who are taking risks and keeping Barcelona’s club scene alive and relevant.
