When it comes to football, you can't get much better than FC Barcelona. To their legions of followers the team is més que un club (more than a club), and when they're on the pitch, football is more than a game – it's an art form. Giving a respectful nod to the club's 2008/09 squad, Barcelona-based dance duo Les filles Föllen explore the forms and choreography that are vital to the sport in Unter der schönen Haut, a unique performance that aims to bring the very different worlds of football and dance closer together, making their audiences view both in a new way.
Meaning “beneath the beautiful skin” in German, Unter der schönen Haut is the creation of ballerinas and choreographers Tuixén Benet and Margherita Bergamo. United by a desire to make dance a more mainstream art form and more easily accessible to the general public, the pair founded Les filles Föllen in 2008, blending their individual interests and eclectic experiences to create original contemporary pieces inspired by the world around them. Their latest project grew from the artists' interest in both the parallels of rhythm and movement that unite football and dance, and in the elitism that separates both practices from their audience. Just as the overly-privileged world of premier league football players is closed off to fans in the stands, so is the world of professional dance removed from the realities of everyday life.
Unter der schönen Haut kicks off its four-day run at Antic Teatre on June 16th. As a warm-up for the show, Les filles Föllen will also screen live kick-about sessions on their website from 2:30pm to 3pm every Monday to Friday until June 10th.
