The collection comprises works by 13 Indian artists who use storytelling to confront the realities of daily life in India. The videos, divided into two programs lasting an hour each, tell of a country in transition, navigating its way through poverty, religious tensions and globalization. In “Fear Father Family,” Shantanu Lodh turns the camera’s eye on to family tradition, while Sharmila Shaman’s “Shanghai Tales” considers the urban landscape of Mumbai as seen through the eyes of a child. Altogether, Videoarte India shows a thriving Indian art world and, what’s more, with women making up the majority of the featured artists, a world that’s breaking with tradition.
