If you’ve seen a music video and talked about it in the last six months, there’s a good chance it was made by arts trio Canada. Our local boys done good are making a name for themselves internationally with their infectious breed of visual escapism. Their creation for Oh Land’s “White Nights” recently saw them win best international pop video at the UK Music Video Awards, where they were nominated in 11 categories. I spoke to one of the trio, Lope, to find out where their journey started and what’s next in the cards.
Lope explained, “Me and Luis met working together in a local TV station in Barcelona. Then, Luis met Nicolás in Madrid. And finally I met Nicolás here in Barcelona, where he came to shoot a commercial.” They have been friends and workmates since the turn of the century and their chemistry is clear: “We’re friends like teenagers are: we party a lot, we laugh a lot and we’re together day and night.”
The boys come from a background in film, Luis and Nicolas both having studied cinema. They began by making shorts and realized that they could team film with their passion for music. Despite their prolifically successful year, they appear to have no plans to slow down. Lope explains, “We’re not only directors but we’re also managing a little company, so we have to deal with the regular issues of being a daily entrepreneur.” They are keen to continue to take on projects that enthuse them, but also realize that to expand, “We must develop the regular commercial activity that any company needs. So, fighting for this equilibrium is the focus of our strategy for the near future.”
It’s tough to pin down Canada on specific projects in the pipeline. Lope says “We’re not prone to planification, it overwhelms us and our growth has been quite haphazard.” One thing that they will say, though, is that their dream artist to work with would be Beck. You heard it here first!
