CHRISTIANE F (1981)
Pulsating with adrenaline and vulnerability, this Uli Edel film centers on German youth and their addictions. Through stark realism and based on true events, the audience watches the characters make risky bets with their lives. The brilliant music, including a Jürgen Knieper composition and tunes by Bowie – a favorite of the protagonist – also play a pivotal role.
VIDEODROME (1983)
Max (James Woods) runs a sleazy smalltime TV station. One day his assistant picks up a pirate signal from a new channel. Known as Videodrome, the programming consists of very convincing torture shows. This David Cronenberg flick tackles the director’s favorite topic: the sexual tie between flesh and machine. Kinky for sure, Deborah Harry even makes a cameo.
FULL MOON IN PARIS (1984)
Louise, a young and restless woman, feels the need to have her own space, at the extreme displeasure of her possessive boyfriend. Convinced she is not prepared to play ‘house’ with him, she rents a small apartment in Paris. Eric Rohmer’s delightful film takes the audience back in time to the Parisian suburbs of architect Ricardo Bofill.
WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (1988)
Almodóvar’s masterpiece is essential, not only for the ridiculously enjoyable screenplay about women who have been cheated on and the excellent performances, but for the colorful costuming, music, design, cinematography, makeup, editing and pace. Perhaps the only surprising disappointment lies with Banderas.
