There’s something about the feel of warm sand and the sun beating down that makes people forget their inhibitions. Without a care in the world, many strip down to the bare essentials all in the name of sunbathing. Although the classic one-piece is back, flesh prevails on Barcelona’s beaches. These scenes of skin and the strange are what inspired Darius Koehli’s Barcelona Fashion Beach project. In true street photo style, none of the images on display were manipulated. Born in Zurich, Darius arrived in Barcelona more than 20 years ago — before the sands of local beaches even existed. He witnessed their evolution first-hand. From the small Catalan family to Europe’s sun-worshippers, the beach is a catwalk of sorts, and the public an accessible audience. All of this rings true in Koehli’s latest showing.
