FOLLOWING CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, 1998. A man spends his time following random strangers for sport The DVD contains two ways to see his game play out. One is linear, while the other incorporates flashbacks, a film trick the director later sharpened with works such as the well-known Memento.
WHO’S THAT KNOCKING AT MY DOOR MARTIN SCORSESE, 1967. In this, Scorsese’s first film, all the ingredients he investigates further in future films are present: Italians in NY, religion, love, sex, with a Pulp Fiction-esque narrative and incredible cinematography.
MALA NOCHE GUS VAN SANT, 1985. Without a lot of drama and a simple look, this film tells the story of unrequited love between a gay shop salesman and an illegal Mexican immigrant. The atmosphere and subject matter are very Gus Van Sant and it only cost $25,000 to make.
SHADOWS JOHN CASSAVETES, 1959. Guy meets girl at a party. When he discovers she is mixed race, everything changes. Considered the first American independent film, Cassavetes let the actors improvise at a ‘jazz tempo’. The result is a poignant story about racism in NY during the 50s and 60s.
