Buzz, born in NYC and a Barcelona resident for the past eight years, truly fell in love with the circus world after getting turned onto the fire poi. A kind of fire chain, it is equipped with wicks that are soaked in fuel and set on fire. Poi spinners then whip them around creating circles and other shapes with fire mid-air. Of course there is no clowning around when it comes to using these bad boys. Getting whacked by a poi can cause major bruising and well, intense pain. Thanks to Buzz’s shop, MalabArte, those wanting poi tips and also looking to add more tricks to their juggling or acrobatic range, can. Even beginners who would like to learn circus-related skills can join in. The brightly colored juggler’s lifestyle shop opened in the Raval last September and offers classes in trapeze and aerial acrobatics with fabric, in addition to selling the standard juggling equipment. The two-hour morning classes are given right in the store. Buzz cleverly outfitted the shop with ropes and pulleys to have the merchandise fly up and into the high ceilings, making way for a class of up to eight students. If its new skills in ball or club juggling, poi, devil sticks, diabolos, or more you’d like to add to your picking-up chicks repertoire, or for any reason, Buzz is happy to give free impromptu classes.
