France’s government not only outlawed smoking in public but also strictly prohibits its presence in adverts. Even though the real Coco puffed on up to 50 sticks a day, officials claim that law comes before historical accuracy. The film – packed with sinful smoking – looks at who Coco Chanel was before women began to wear her impeccably tailored designs. Coming from modest beginnings, Coco began as a tailor’s assistant. Things drastically changed for her after meeting playboy and millionaire Étienne Balsan (Benoît Poelvoorde).
