A cupcake craze may have swept Barcelona last year but there is nothing faddish about Cup&Cake, who arguably produce the city’s best miniature cakes. Owner Manex founded Cup&Cake a year ago in the spirit of recovering the role of the traditional pastry maker, an increasingly lost art in this era of frozen doughs and factory-made goods.

Cup & Cake (Enric Granados)

145 enric granados, Barcelona, Catalonia

Mon–Fri 8:45am–2pm and 4pm–8:15am, Sat 10am–2:30pm and 4:30pm–8:30pm, Sun 10:30am–2:30pm and 4pm–8pm

A cupcake, as with any normal cake, is made using relatively few essential ingredients like butter, sugar, eggs and flour. To produce the food perfect pastry, Cup&Cake selects the highest grade ingredients available: luxury chocolate from French manufacturer Valhrona, fresh pasteurized milk from Granja Cal Porta of Sant Fruitós de Bagés, Montsec butter from Catalunya and ecological flour from J. Renobell. Their French-trained chef is a perfectionist. The result: flawless cupcakes, including in red velvet, carrot, chocolate, vanilla and cinammon apple walnut flavors – simple and elegant, with no pretentions.

Rounding out the sweet offering are brownies and muffins as well as croissants. And what better companion than a coffee supplied by Cafés El Magnífico, awarded “Spain’s Best Espresso” last year? If sweets aren’t your cup of tea there are also a range of gourmet sandwiches prepared with the same loving care. Manex, an accomplished interior designer, created the shop on tree-lined Enric Granados to be a space in which all feel comfortable. In time for summer, Cup&Cake have just opened a take-away location on Tallers that, in addition to pastries, serves up frozen, organic yoghurt with a range of available toppings. This fantastic dessert is something practically absent until now in Barcelona, rich yet light on the waistline.
