Athletes and fans will converge on Barcelona for the 20th European Athletics Championships later this summer. Cristina Slattery

Later this summer, athletes, fans, and orange-shirted volunteers will all converge on Barcelona for the 20th European Athletics Championships. Among the events that will take place at the Estadi Olímpic on Montjuïc are the 20 km walk, discus throw, and 400 meter hurdles.

One Spanish athlete, Ruth Beitia, who holds the Spanish record for the high jump, has confidently predicted that she will come away from the competition a medal-winner. The 31- year-old athlete from Santander started high jumping at the age of six. She radiated enthusiasm over the opportunity to compete in her home country when she visited Barcelona for a preview event last April. Cheering on Ruth and the other Spanish competitors, as well as athletes from across Europe, will be Barni, the Championships’ mascot. A white, squishy animated figure with an oversized head and bit of a paunch, Barni has a blog visitors can consult to learn more about the qualifying races and competitions leading up to this summer’s competitions.
