Zen meditation is offered as a free introductory class every Friday. Carey Zamarriego

Sitting still for an extended period of time is a challenge in and of itself. Even more of a feat is maintaining a posture while staring straight ahead—especially when the person next to you is wriggling about and you’re tempted to shift your sight to see what is going on.

Zazen, a Zen Buddhist sitting meditation developed by Zen Master Dogen, a 13th century Buddhist monk and philosopher, is all about approaching spiritual awakening with open eyes. At Dojo Zen Barcelona Kannon, which moved from its Born location to Ronda Universitat in December, Lluís Salas, a Zen monk, offers a free introductory class to the enigmatic practice every Friday. An hour and a half long, the mediation session, which has practitioners stare at the wall in a lotus or semi-lotus posture, is split into two half-hour silent meditation periods, with about five minutes of walking meditation in between. Instructions are given in Catalan, but Spanish and even a bit of English are spoken when needed (it’s helpful to brush up on Catalan body part vocabulary beforehand). Space is limited, so email to reserve a spot and for only €25 a month, Dojo members have access to unlimited Zazen sessions.
